Why The Best Meditation Requires Feedback

Author : Carol McMahon

What do you gain from meditation? Consider what could be Imagine a "world of peace and ease," yours without changing a thing Imagine perfect mental balance: "a balance of mind never upset by any event under the canopy of heaven " Meditation holds promise of: "Great Liberation;" "Great Knowledge;" "Great tranquility " Great promise however is rarely fulfilled

Most who meditate gain rest and relaxation, and little more The shortfall is due to a flaw in traditional methods This flaw prevents the growth of practice skill, holding benefit to the beginner level (Some get even less effective with practice ) Meditation's flaw is the lack of feedback necessary for learning Let me explain

Meditation: What's Missing?

To a research psychologist with an interest in skill learning, meditation is missing something Practicing any skill leads to improvement only if you can see what you are doing In basketball for instance, shooting hoops in darkness would only waste time because knowledge of results is required for learning The rule applies equally to meditation

Shooting Hoops In Darkness? Why Meditation Requires Feedback

In meditation, attention is the skill you need to develop Benefits increase with power of concentration

While attending however (to your breath; a mantra, etc), attention slips away unseen Like shooting hoops in darkness, you practice meditation without knowing you're on target You lose attention without knowing you are losing it, and find out only later when you wake from a daydream

All traditional methods share this flaw They lack feedback They offer no way to monitor attention, yet amazingly, the necessary feedback is right before our eyes and has been there all along, unrecognized Here's how to find it

Finding Feedback Right Before Your Eyes!

Throughout meditation's long history, sensations of light have been noted "Illumination" is described; light is seen at enlightenment We failed however, to see the cause of this light We never knew it was visual feedback - the very thing needed to excel at meditation

Light sensations are produced when focused attention holds the eyes still Here a "fixed image" (an image held in the same place on the eyes retinas) uses up photo pigment (like exposing photographic film) Retinal fatigue follows, and with it distortion in the form of light

This light signals attention It tells you you're on target When your mind wanders, your eyes wander too and the light disappears, signaling loss of attention Use the light as feedback and you can see what you are doing You gain the same advantage as seeing your target shooting hoops Practice skill improves automatically The key to great benefit is right before your eyes

The Feedback Meditation Method How-To

Producing feedback is as easy as gazing at a spot on the floor Focusing Discs however, specially designed to facilitate feedback, are freely available at the Straight Line Meditation website These assure beginners instant success Focus on the bull's eye and feedback comes within seconds Attend to the light and you anchor attention Then you can hold attention the way you would grab a rope for a tow You're taken straight to the best meditation

How Feedback Upgrades Meditation Practice

Feedback upgrades meditation practice by eliminating the shortfalls of traditional methods It puts an end to:
* Wasted practice time (With traditional methods, even with the best intentions, time is spent dreaming and drifting when you'd hoped for attention )
* Slow, or even no practice skill development ("After twenty years," warned a Zen Master, "you can finally say you've begun to learn how to sit ")
* Slow, unreliably progress (Traditional methods yield slow, unreliable benefit "Just sit," says Buddhism, "Maybe after many lifetimes you will come upon the truth ")

These shortfalls are due to the inefficiency of traditional methods Feedback counters the problem with precision self-guidance It gives you a personal (meditation) trainer with a constantly vigilant eye The outcome is fast, sure, practice skill development and productive use of every minute of practice time

It's how well you meditate (not necessarily how long), that determines your benefit Feedback lets you trade hours spent meditating for minutes on target Great benefit awaits the best meditation, and the best meditation requires feedback

Published By: Holistic Health Articles

How To Meditate Better Than Your Guru The Feedback Solution

Author : Carol McMahon

Better than your Guru? No joke is intended Read this and be free of the problem that limits success in all forms of meditation: mind's uncontrollable wandering
Even Gurus are plagued by drifting and dreaming; time spent wandering when they'd hoped for attention Now an easy solution makes success a sure thing The solution is "feedback " Here's how it works and how to use it

Why Meditation Needs Feedback
Attention is the key to success in meditation Attention makes it work When you sit down to meditate however, even with the best intentions, mind wanders Attention is hard to hold on to, but why? The answer holds the solution!
Why is attention so hard to hold on to? It's because you lose attention without knowing you are losing it In meditation, attention slips away unseen To a research psychologist with an interest in skill learning, the solution is obvious: meditation needs feedback

The Feedback Solution
In meditation your aim is attention, but if you can't see your target you can't correct your aim Meditation is like shooting darts blindfolded To excel in meditation (as in darts), you need to see what you are doing You need a way to monitor attention Visual feedback is the answer Where can we find it? Amazingly, it's been right before our eyes all along, unrecognized

Where To Find Feedback? Right Before Your Eyes!
I found feedback by accident while meditating with my eyes open My attention was focused on a spot on the floor when I noticed a small halo of light flickering round it The light was feedback -- visual proof of attention - the key to self-guidance and certain success It works like this

"Seeing The Light:" Precision Guidance From Feedback
The light I saw had been seen before (with Zen's "open gaze," and often at enlightenment) Its origin and usefulness however, was never recognized We missed the fact that this light is caused by attention itself
A light sensation is produced when focused attention holds the eyes still The steady gaze holds the image in the same place on the eyes' retinas Retinal fatigue follows and with it visual distortion in the form of light
As long as you attend, you see the light When your mind wanders however, your eyes wander and the light disappears In this way it guides you, signaling attention and alerting you when you wander off I let feedback guide me that day In under an hour I experienced the breakthrough so hard to achieve with traditional techniques Feedback makes meditation a whole new ballgame In place of wandering in circles there's a straight line to success

'A Whole New Ballgame:' The Feedback Advantage
With traditional methods, mind's wandering leads to slow, or even no practice skill development Progress is unreliable, and there's no guaranteed return on invested time Feedback prevents these problems, making meditation a whole new ballgame Here's the how-to

The Feedback Method How-To
Focusing discs specially designed to facilitate feedback are available online at http://www StraightLineMeditation com (a spot on the floor will also serve) Simply focus with a gentle gaze on the bull's eye Visual distortions (sensations of light) will appear, signaling attention Shift your attention to the light When your mind wanders, your eyes will wander and the light will vanish That's your signal to re-focus on the bull's eye Repeat this sequence, focusing on feedback as a daily practice

Meditating in Circles versus Straight Line Meditation
Traditional meditation wanders When you stop wandering you cover ground fast Feedback guides you straight to your meditation goal For detailed instruction at all practice levels along with self-tests to guide you, see STRAIGHT LINE MEDITATION by Carol E McMahon, Ph D with Master Deac Cataldo See the light Your Guru will be awed More at http://www TheBestWayToMeditate com

Published By: Holistic Health Articles

Learning How to Meditate

Author : Emily Taggart

If you are wanting to learn to meditate, then you have come to the right place While you can probably find an abundance of different ways to meditate, here is one simple way that doesn t cost a penny, is easy to do, and can be done by anyone It is quite effective for not only relieving stress on a regular basis, but can also be a base for healing a number of different ailments So if you need to relieve stress and anxiety, or want a good start to fix what ails you, then listen up

The first step is finding a nice, quiet area This can be in a bedroom, a corner of your home or office, whatever Now it is a good idea to have absolutely no distractions for at least twenty to thirty minutes, ten to do your deep breathing exercises, and twenty for the actual meditation In order to get into the proper mood, you need a comfortable chair, and the lights turned down low You can light some candles to get this mood going You don t want to be so comfortable that you will fall asleep, just deeply relaxed You can also play some music, but soft music is preferred, or even a CD with nature sounds, like waves crashing, or a babbling brook, something soft

Sit in your chair in a comfortable position, feet flat on the floor Close your eyes, and breath slowly and deeply through your nose, holding it in for a few seconds once your lungs are full, then breathe out slowly through your mouth Do this for five minutes, not really thinking about anything, letting go of the tension There are two reasons for this One is that breathing like this fills your body with oxygen The second is that it forces you to pause

If you find that you open your eyes once in awhile, don t worry about it, and don t force yourself to keep your eyes closed Open them, look around check the clock, then close your eyes again Now, with your eyes closed, picture yourself in front of a quiet pond that has a bunch of stones or pebbles These are the thoughts and stresses in your life These can also represent illnesses, cancers, or what ever your problem at the time might be One by one, remove these stones and place them aside It is a good idea to limit the amount of stones to ten or fifteen of the most important things that you want to get rid of, so you aren t spending the whole time taking out stones This should be about ten minutes

Now here is where you can really customize your meditative experience For just regular meditation, you want to put stones back into the pond that associate with things that represent relaxation or good aspects of your life Maybe you could fill it with things that you dream about wanting, that nice house, your ideal partner, etc For healing, this is when you focus on the part of your body that is ill, or needs help healing, like a broken bone mending, getting stronger, or antibodies killing that cancer Do this for another ten minutes The last five minutes, use your deep breathing exercises again, and slowly bring yourself back to reality Now don t expect a miracle, but if you do this on a regular basis, it will work

Published By: Holistic Health Articles

Author : Marissa Moonwhisper

Meditation is defined as The act of continued or extended thought, reflection, or contemplation It is used by millions around the world to relax the physical body It is also used to accelerate and amplify spiritual enlightenment and growth Meditation gives you a way to deal with the stresses of everyday life, and will also help you both feel and look younger and more alert There is no way to practice meditation incorrectly, but there are ways to ensure you are meditating at maximum effectiveness In this guide, you will be given a 10 step list for effective meditation

1) Daily practice You don t need to have a set schedule This doesn t mean you need to take several hours out of every day just to meditate Try to fit it in your schedule Simple breathing exercises before bed and when you wake up in the morning are a good start In general, being constantly aware of your body will help you stay in a good state throughout the day

2) Mindfulness This is a good method to practice, because it doesn t take up any time Paying attention to your body is the focus of this Noticing little things about your breathing or reactions to events

3) Follow the breath This is a term commonly used in meditation circles It involves inhaling through your nose, and feeling the air going into your lungs, before feeling it leave Beginners should count to 10 to help stay on pace This is a main fundamental of meditation This will become much more natural with practice

4) Reading Reading may help you achieve a meditative state It will help you stimulate thoughts and will help you reflect on your own life

5) Exercise Some would call this physical meditation Be sure to stay mindful of your body during and after

Meditation isn t all about sitting on a pillow, it is also about finding the still point of your mind while moving

6) Feeling negative emotions is a good sign When you re feeling sadness, anger, or fear during meditation, it means you are revealing layers that you have previously pushed from the forefront of your mind Don t ignore these feelings, embrace them, try to understand them

7) Don t push yourself Beginners and long timers alike, it can be frustrating to stop yourself from thinking Don t force it If you re having troubles and your thoughts are wandering, accept it and observe them

8) Practice Compassion Begin by following the breath, after you re comfortable, think of the world Move from loved ones to the rest of the world Imagine the sicknesses and the pains of the world Embrace the feelings and let them go into an unconditional love Imagine the pains going from a black tar to a blue sky

9) Eat Healthy A healthy diet can make or break your mental health It will help all aspects of your body, physically and emotionally

10) Music and ambient noise Having the right music or ambient noise can help with mindfulness Sitting back and relaxing while you listen to your favorite sounds or CD and meditate might just be the trick for you

These is just a basic guide to help you meditate to the fullest extent of your abilities For more information on specific techniques, there are many CD s, books, videos, and online articles that can be a great asset to your meditating

Published By: Holistic Health Articles

Stress Relief Through Meditation

Author : Emily Taggart

Stress comes from many different sources that usually revolve around anxiety and depression It is visible in an employee who could no longer keep up with the demands of his boss; or in a student who strives to be at top of the class; or in a mother who does all the cleaning in the house while taking care of three toddlers No matter which direction you face, stress seems to be everywhere

There are several ways to deal with stress A wide variety of solutions can be attempted, depending on what works best for you Did you know that you could live a stress free life without having to spend a dime on counseling fees or for a stress management course? Yes, the most effective way for relieving us form life s daily strains and pressures is easily achievable by meditation

Meditation is a type of psychological discipline that gives a practitioner a chance to overlook his current mental state and see the state beyond his normal thinking Simply put, meditation is forgetting one s actual condition, that which is shrouded with stress, to give way for a relaxing state of mind Meditation can be done in many ways, as contrary to what many know The idea of meditation to most people circles around images of yoga like positions Although this may be true, there are various ways to meditate

Walking

The seat of meditation is not on one s position but on one s mental state Meditation can be done in whatever position a practitioner prefers One of the more famous alternative positions for meditation is walking While one walks, he is still able to leave his current state of mind and go into a peaceful one that could relieve him of the stress he is encountering in his normal conscious world

Eating

Meditating while eating proves effective for some people as well This is again to emphasize that although the surroundings play an important role to one s meditation, it is not the sole basis for the practitioner s successful session

Scanning a specific part of the body

Body scan involves meditation by merely focusing on a specific part of the practitioner s body; it can be his knee, his toe, his finger, etc Many are using this most common meditation practice

Since meditation means temporarily leaving the present, complete concentration is required of a practitioner To attain total concentration, the following must be observed:

1 A positive attitude to withstand distracting elements like thoughts of current stressful conditions

2 A quiet and peaceful environment, which will not distract you from concentrating

3 A position that you will be most comfortable in since meditation may take longer than what you expect

4 A focal point (for body scan type of meditation or for stationary meditation) where your vision will rest during the entire duration of the process

These things can all be accomplished in the comfort of your home, while the children are out for school or while the toddlers are asleep for their afternoon nap You can even meditate in your own bedroom, or in the comfort of your garden or office Meditation will assure you a stress free day, which gives way for rejuvenated energy just before another stress battle begins

Published By: Holistic Health Articles

Relax Your Mind With Wellness Meditation On Your Computer

Author : Dilip Dahanukar

It is truly remarkable how technology has changed our life in the last 30 years We are now glued to the computer and experience mental fatigue and stress As we have changed our working methods, we need innovative solutions to de stress and rest our minds quickly from time to time to refresh our faculties I began thinking about how to do it

Within us we have a Mind which functions as the Commander in Chief of the body It has an able deputy in the Body Manager who keeps the body alive and ticking The Body Manager has automated most of the functions like heart beat, renal and bowel movement, breathing and sweating It has set in triggers for gland functioning like secreting saliva when there is food in the mouth, releasing bile juices when there is food in the stomach and so on The Mind cannot stop the Body Manager for these automated functions

The Mind receives information from its five senses In addition to inputs from five senses, the Mind is conscious of movement of body parts particularly head, limbs and the torso All these inputs trigger memories in the mind raising thoughts which are then co related to formulate questions in the brain The Mind then races to find answers to these questions If the conclusions are difficult to reach or if they are conflicting, the brain gets trapped in endless loops The cloudy and whirling thoughts in the Mind confuse the Body Manager who does not know what to expect The distraction of the Body Manager disrupts normal functioning of the body and ailments begin to show up

The Mind has to learn therefore how to control these unending thoughts It must learn how to save the files and retrieve the problems as and when it wants to devote time to it This is achieved through meditation Meditation is a process by which the Mind learns how to manage its thoughts

There are a number of ways of doing meditation One can divide these ways into 2 basic types: (1) Flooding and (2) Emptying In Flooding, the mind is flooded with heavy sensory inputs like chanting mantra, aerobic exercises or dancing or listening to loud music These heavy sensory inputs have no conflict and thus do not trigger any logical processes in the mind When the mind is flooded these new simple sensory inputs they push out the other thoughts in the mind and reduce mental stress On the other hand for meditation to empty the mind, sensory inputs are greatly reduced by keeping the body still and the eyes closed With shutting down the input streams, no memories are triggered, no questions arise and the mental processes slow down and the Mind puts the trapped thoughts to sleep Both these techniques have merit in them But both of them need considerable time to achieve the result Besides they cannot be done in the workplace sitting in front of the computer

We all know as we open a new webpage, it quickly changes the subject in our mind It has an instant way of resetting our mind It is this ability of the computer which I thought of using for instant meditation For this technique, the new screen image must be powerful enough to capture the attention of the viewer And suddenly I discovered the truth underlying the huge appeal of sex sites No doubt sex related webpages are being used for relaxation to divert the mind instantly and effectively But I rejected the idea for my instant meditation as I found it distasteful Viewing a sex page is powerful stimulus and a cue for the Body Manager to trigger body functions not wanted at the workplace It can never be accepted by any organization A more benign webpage could be a YouTube video clip showing the recipe of making a delicious dish like Bacon, Lettuce and Tomato (BLT) sandwich! But the food site also has an effect on the body A stimulated body could distract attention from work I needed a screen image which will change the mind frame without trigging any body secretions or functions It must restrict itself solely to change the state of the mind Preferably it should arouse appreciation of Nature and create a feeling of well being The closer to Alpha State that it take the mind to, the better

The easiest way, which sages have found in meditation to empty your mind of thoughts, is by surrender Devotees mentally surrender to their object of worship When you surrender you give up trying to solve the problems which vex your mind You leave it to who you have surrendered to! Love is the result of surrender When you love someone or something, you put reason aside and you get ready to accept whatever happens Love possesses your mind and pushes out rational thinking You can love a person, a pet, an inanimate thing or planet Earth The amazing ways by which the Earth sustains our lives has now come to the fore when we have her overburdened her with our increased population I am fascinated by the wonderful way of our planet Earth gives us pure water to drink! Without rain life will perish We humans are the creatures of mother Earth and she is worthy of our love and awe! I love the way rainfall washes off all the dirt and rejuvenates life Landscape changes to green and new growth begins Rain resets the Earth I began collecting pictures about rain and found that they really work for this new instant and practical form of meditation I did not merely look at the rain pictures superficially but observed them in detail trying to imagine being on the scene and sharing thoughts of those in the picture I found it was a quick way of switching mental state without triggering any of the body functions It engulfed me with a feeling of well being I named this process as 'Wellness Meditation '

I would like to share my find with my readers You can download for free the pdf picture book called 'Rainy Day' that I compiled with these rain pictures which you can use for the meditation It is not a book to flip through It is book to go through page by page, and picture by picture You have to put yourself in the mood of the photo and think what it is like to be on that scene at that time You have to think what you would be feeling if you were present on the scene when the photo was taken As you do that, you will fill your mind with the appreciation of rain and rainy days and feel good with surging warmth of wellness in your mind It is a book which will act as a cue for relaxing the mind The more times you see it, the easier and quicker you will ease your mind Wellness Meditation conditions you to relax, flip to alpha state and get de stressed You will find improvement in your concentration and in the quality of your work output when you begin to do this healthy form of meditation And it's all done on your computer screen without offending or disturbing anyone! The technique is to save the Rainy Day pdf file on your desktop The first couple of times devote time to see each picture intently and absorb the mood Thereafter it's easy and quick You can use it time and again to see it for a just few minutes, get instantly refreshed and continue your work You will see how it works wonders for you as it does for me

Published By: Holistic Health Articles

Author : Dada Vedaprajinananda

If you are active in any kind of artistic endeavor, whether in writing, music or the visual arts, one of the biggest challenges is to be original and to extend your creativity to new dimensions You can't "learn" how to be creative and that is why creativity is sometimes viewed as a "gift" or an inborn talent that you either have or you don't have However true that may be there are ways to enhance your creativity, and one of the best means is through meditation

Many people think that meditation is only useful for learning how to relax or others may associate it with religious or spiritual pursuits Both of these views have a bit of validity but there is another aspect of meditation that is not generally well known Meditation has the capacity to help one deepen one's intuition and creativity

In fact another name for meditation is "intuitional practice " According to yoga and meditation masters, most human beings utilize only a fraction of their mental capacity They remain engrossed in their conscious and subconscious minds but are unable to tap the powers of their "super conscious" mind These yogis say that this super conscious mind (roughly equivalent to Carl Jung's concept of the collective unconscious mind) is the place where creativity and artistic expression originate

All people enter this higher realm from time to time but their contact with it is often fleeting When you practice meditation, and learn how to detach yourself from your physical surroundings and from the disturbances of your body, and go deeper into your inner mental world you will be at the gates of the more subtle layers of the mind and can enter this super conscious mind for longer periods

The more you practice meditation the more "intuitive" you will become It doesn't happen immediately and may not even happen all of a sudden It is a gradual process and that is why many people practice meditation and give it up thinking that nothing is happening

How can you tell if you are making progress? Sometimes other people will notice the change in you and comment on it This makes sense because we are often not the best judge of ourselves and it is difficult to see things that are very close to us For example, when you grew as a child you were not able to see your physical growth, and probably were reminded of it by people who hadn't seen you for a few months or a year

Another way to know if you are making progress is that your feelings of love for others grows, and you become more large hearted and service minded As you feel better about yourself, it is natural that you will feel better about others

But what about the creativity that I started off talking about? Well, if you are practicing some kind of artistic activity, that activity will get more subtle and become more fruitful as you get more established in meditation In fact, even if you think you have meager artistic capacity, the constant practice of meditation can help you to develop talents that you would have never dreamed possible So, try it out and get ready for some amazing results

Published By: Holistic Health Articles

Author : Keith Ward

The human is in a constant state of repair When we sleep, our bodies take that time to heal itself and rid itself of foreign pathogens, as well as damaged tissue and bones Every part of the human body is made of microscopic cells These cells react to many different variables Some of these variables include stress

Stress can cause the cells in the body to reject themselves as well as the antibodies that help to protect it This can cause a person to become prone to illnesses like the cold and the flu, as well as other ailments Meditation has been used for centuries as a way to balance the mind and help heal the body There are many different ways that meditation can help

The body's immune system functions on a delicate balance When that balance is disrupted, the body cannot fight infection and illness as well Many things can throw the balance off Stress is one of the more frequent causes of this balance being disrupted If the body or mind is under a great deal of stress, it will send information to the rest of the body causing its cells to disrupt their own signal which will cause them to stop functioning correctly When the cells stop functioning correctly, they begin to break down or turn against themselves

Meditation can correct this imbalance Through meditation, the mind can relax and release the negative energy that can build up over time Stress can also cause a person to lose sleep, which deprives the body of the time it needs to heal Stress induced loss of sleep is usually caused by the mind being unable to shut down Meditative relaxation techniques help the mind to relax and release the tension in both the mind and the body This will allow the mind to go into a sleep cycle, giving the body time to repair

Stress can be caused by many factors Chief among these factors are issues with work and money Meditation can help with patience levels, allowing the mind to handle stressful situations It can also assist in easing the mind and keeping it fresh These techniques can be used for job situations, as well The techniques of meditation can help with concentration Through meditation, you can gain the power to have control over your thoughts, and even occasionally stop them all together Through meditation, you can relieve your anxieties and have a clear and peaceful mind

Science shows that, during a period of alertness, the human brain produces a specific type of brain wave called beta waves Beta waves are usually associated with busy, active, and anxious thinking as well as active concentration However, in meditation, the human brain generates alpha waves, theta waves, and occasionally delta waves These frequencies are typical in the brain activity of a person that is sleeping, however, in meditation, the person is still alert and focusing on stimuli

It is these wave lengths that allow for the mind and body to repair itself, as well as come to a calm pause in conscious thought, which allows for time of self reflection and balance Scans also show that a person that meditates has a more balanced and equalised brain pattern

By balancing the mind and body through meditation, a person can promote positive physical and mental changes in themselves During meditation, the body has time to recharge and regenerate any lost cells and repair the damages done by illness and stress Meditation can also assist in lowering a persons stress levels and has also been shown to help lower blood pressure, as well There are many studies that show the scientific and medical benefits of meditation There are many different health benefits, including benefits for the heart, cancer and also some mental and psychological disorders, such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD

Published By: Holistic Health Articles
