Positive Attitudes – The Path to Achieving Your Goals

Michael Jeffreys | 03-10-2009 | Self-Improvement | Viewed: 322 | Bookmark and Share
Article Summary This article examines the importance of having a positive attitude in attaining your goals and desires. It specifically examines addressing setbacks, stress, failures and how to build and maintain a positive attitude.
"Your living is determined not so much by what life brings to you as by the attitude you bring to life; not so much by what happens to you as by the way your mind looks at what happens."
- John Homer Miller

Your attitude consists of your feelings towards people, objects and situations. It is the one thing that is our own, far greater in significance than how educated we are or how experienced we are in the ways of the world. Positive attitudes are the most important source of wealth that a person can possess and they are often the deciding factor in determining what a person is made of. Unfortunately, in these stressful times when jobs are insecure because of economic highs and lows and relationships are under added pressure, having a positive attitude is easier said than done.

Positive Attitudes Can Help Temporary Setbacks
Most highly successful men and women have one thing in common - they realize that disappointments and setbacks are a part of life. Like the world class athlete who finds his form slipping or the movie star whose movies have begun to fail once too often. What separates these men and women is their attitude in the face of adversity. Whereas a lesser person may give up hope and slink away, people with positive attitudes know that better days are just around the corner and this is what makes all the difference between super achievers and the perennial under achiever.

Building Positive Attitudes
In the words of Tiger Woods, arguably the greatest athlete of our time, "No matter how good or bad you get, you can always get better and that's the exciting part." Talk about a Positive Attitude!

Unfortunately, most people at some point or another in their lives get stuck in a rut. They stop believing in the awesome power of their potential. Having a positive attitude can challenge you and push you to greater heights. The power of positive attitudes focuses on the belief that any situation or person has a positive side, however invisible it may seem. Seeing the situation from an opposite, more positive side may be difficult at first, but with practice, it can make huge and dynamic changes in your thought process.

The old "half-empty, half-full glass" analogy may seem cliché, but is as true today as it has been for generations before. Try examining the situation from all angles. There is an overwhelming chance that you'll find that things could have been worse or that the situation is not that bad. This may take time to focus on, but when it does happen, you will be filled with happiness and positivity. Cultivating the right attitude may initially seem impossible if you have spent the better part of your life complaining about how things might have been. Don't lose hope. You can seek self help in the form of workshops, training and seminars that can teach you how to develop a positive attitude and greatly change your view of life.
