When you're young, there is little that is more intriguing than that which your parents try to keep from you. When you're a parent, though, you understand why a child should be kept from things that are beyond their level of maturity.

The online world offers numerous diversions for kids, like free flash games, that can keep them busy for hours at a stretch when you need some peace and quiet. Unfortunately, there's a whole world of materials that are inappropriate for them. There is a vast quantity of sexually explicit websites, gambling sites, sites devoted to drugs, and even sites that help them cheat at school. Your child could use social media to befriend a dangerous person. Many kids are inherently trusting, and their naivete could make them prey for predators, however rare actual instances may be. Kids may not realize they are sharing too much about your household. Or they might use the web to bully other children. They could get access to your credit cards and charge things online. They could even get hooked on the computer's glow, and stay up all night online when they should be getting the sleep they need to grow. Adolescents and teens are especially at risk for engaging in dangerous activities, sharing too much information, and suffering from damaged reputations as a result of their online behaviour.

All is not lost though. Parents can take action to make sure their home computers stay safe. Most significantly, parents need to be aware. From that awareness, parents must commit to taking action to make their household safe. This means setting boundaries, and communicating with your kids about risky and dangerous things that happen online. Assuming that they are smart enough to know what's what is too big a risk to take. And when you catch them violating the rules, they need to be penalized for their transgressions, so they know you mean business.

Talking to them, as you know, may just go in one ear and out the other, as young people tend to have selective hearing. That's why the next step is to put measures in place the block them from illicit material and inform you of what they're up to. Computers should never be considered the kids' property. It's your house, and it is your responsibility to raise them; therefore, the computer is yours. You have the right to filter it however you wish.

Security programs for your computer are widely available, often from your internet service provider. These systems allow you to limit their browsing to family-friendly sites, limit their email and messaging usage, and keep watch on their social media networks for potentially dangerous or troublesome conversations. You can even have reports of their activities emailed to you, summarizing what you need to know.

If you want your kids to be able to enjoy free flash kids games, but you don't want them re-enacting violence, there are sites out there specifically themed for non-violent online games for kids. Set their profile to limit web browsing to sites you approve. It just requires a bit of searching on your part to ensure that your children are only playing free online games that you're comfortable with.

These layers of safety don't fall into place by accident. Like any other parental duty, they take work on your part, but when the result is the safety of your children, it's definitely worth the effort.
