Approaching Video Games As Self Improvement Tools

Article Summary While it's understandable that one would consider playing video games to be an unproductive way to spend one's time, there are lessons to be learned and valuable traits that one can develop through gaming.
Video gaming has long been cited as potentially dangerous activity for children who don't know when to say when, and spend many hours engrossed in the activity. Instead of being outside, playing sports, playing games, and getting exercise, generations of video gamers grew up exercising only their fingers and staring at the TV like a zombie. With childhood obesity levels higher than ever before, it's not much of a logical leap to think that video games replacing physical activities has something to do with it.

However, there's more to it than that. While it's understandable that one would consider playing video games to be an unproductive way to spend one's time, there are lessons to be learned and valuable traits that one can develop through gaming. Video games are a recreational activity that one enjoys for the sake of simply doing the activity, just as much as playing a sport, assembling a jigsaw puzzle, or completing a crossword.

All games challenge those who play it. When you are challenged, you must figure out the parameters of the challenge, know your capabilities and limitations, figure out how to approach the situation, and learn from your mistakes. The most basic of video games demands this of you, even the flash games for kids that are free online. You must figure out the explicit rules and implicit dynamics of the game to win.

Getting better at a game means working on your skills. In any activity you have to have discipline so you can put in the consistent effort it takes to get better. Video games are designed to be fun, which helps, but unless you have the discipline to keep coming back, even when it gets hard, you won't eventually push through the challenges to victory.

Another character trait that is valuable is the flexibility to adapt. Many times when you're playing a game, the same strategies won't always work. For example, when you need to beat a boss to clear a level, that boss will likely not behave and fight the same as any other boss you've encountered before. It's not uncommon to get stuck at a certain boss until you discover the appropriate tactics that will defeat it. Stubbornly sticking to the same moves won't get you anywhere. You must adapt, and change what you're doing if you want to succeed.

Too much drive and devotion, though, could lead to obsession and overuse. If your children are spending too much time and energy on any one thing, it could be unhealthy for them. Therefore, gaming necessitates learning to exercise restraint and balance. Too much of a good thing can develop into an addiction, and with video games, one needs to know the right time to step away from the game for a while. Having limits set by parents can regulate gaming, but it's a valuable skill in life to be able to stop yourself at the right time. In some cases, gamers have even died from spending days on end on a single game while ignoring the necessities of life. Letting an activity overwhelm your life is dangerous and unhealthy.

Fortunately, you don't have to spend hours, days, weeks on a single game in order to develop character and learn life lessons. You can challenge yourself to a simple flash kids game available free online. You'll have fun, but if you push yourself to emerge triumphant at the end of the game, you can feel the pride of accomplishment and self-improvement.
