Whether it's a school trip, camping trip or other event, keeping kids occupied can be of vital importance. The moment they are left to their own devices, who knows what trouble they could be causing. Keeping children entertained can be tricky, especially if they don't all have the same interests. Football fanatics can be kept busy by simply pitting them against each other, but children who are not so enthusiastic about sporting activities can be hard to please. When reading a story isn't enough anymore, you need smarter ideas of how to keep kids entertained.
Sports
Sports, and specifically team games, are one of the best ways of occupying children. The best thing about team games is that they encourage the children to play and work together, making them all responsible for their performance. Games such as football can be played with minimal equipment; with jumpers for goal posts, while other team games like rounders or hockey require a lot of equipment and forethought.
Board Games
If children are not into sport, or you want to prevent them from exhausting themselves, you might choose to try to engage them in other sorts of games, such as board games. Apart from Twister, they are difficult to play on the floor, so you may need to provide seating and a surface for the game to be played on. Folding tables are ideal for outdoor use, and are much lighter and more practical to transport and carry. You could also consider using folding chairs, which also fold flat and are light and easy to move around.
Of course it all depends on the game - buckaroo might benefit from each player stepping up to the table one at a time, while trivial pursuit will require all players to be around the table at all times, in order to answer questions and progress around the board. Board games based on TV shows can work well, as almost every child will easily understand how the game works.
Cooking
Kids love to eat, so rather than having them creating mayhem around you, consider involving them in any food preparation or cooking. It might be their belly which leads them to help out, rather than any desire to learn about cooking, but it will keep them busy and entertained for hours. There's something rewarding about cooking a nice meal and this can rub off onto the kids. They will feel a sense of satisfaction when seeing the plated-up meals, and will enjoy telling their friends and family about the lovely meal they helped to prepare.
