Article Summary Aggressive behavior in cats is not something that has to remain for a long time. There are cat behavior training techniques that you can apply that will answer the question of how to discipline a kitten or a feline. Read on for effective cat training tips.
Cats are good companions, especially when they're curling on your lap, purring happily, and so on. When you see aggressive behavior in cats e.g. they're misbehaving, being destructive in the house, hissing at you, and the like, however, that can be a problem. You should learn advices on how to discipline a kitten so that you can have a well behaved kitty. The following are some cat behavior training pointers or cat training tips that will help you improve your cat's attitude:

Pointer Number One: Punishing cats is not as effective as 'punishing' dogs.

When you reprimand a dog, more often than not, it will try not to do whatever it is you punished it for. This is not the case with cats. If you notice aggressive behavior in cats and you shout at them, hit them with a broom, etc, you still can't expect those fur balls to improve on their behavior. The truth is, kitties don't respond well to reprimands, thus, there are other things you can do to reinforce good attitude in them.

Pointer Number Two: Kittens are impatient creatures.

Training cats may be more difficult than training doggies. You see, a cat's patience is very much shorter than a dog's. An advice on how to discipline a kitten, therefore, is for you to make training sessions shorter. Part of cat behavior training strategies, in fact, is to see to it that the sessions last only 15 minutes or less and not more than that. Included in cat training tips is to break down a long session in separate sessions that last fifteen minutes or less each so that your cat's attention doesn't wander elsewhere. Remember too that the best time for training is before a kitty's meal time as kittens respond better to training when it's nearing their meal time and they are hungry. Weird, right, but true.

Pointer Number Three: Use your kitty's name during the sessions.

Another tip on how to discipline a kitten is to call it by the name while commanding or instructing it. Keep in mind that names have 'power', thus, when ordering your kitten to do something, or teaching it better behavior, do not forget to address it by its name. Example of effective cat behavior training is this: (for instance if your kitten is named: Peanuts) you'll see more improvement if you say: 'Peanuts, do not climb up there!' as opposed to: 'Kitty, do not climb up there!'

Pointer Number Four: Giving rewards is important.

When your kitty did something good or right, one of the cat training tips you should not forget to do is to reward it or praise it. This process is referred to as operative conditioning. You see, cats actually respond well when it comes to praising them or showering them with treats. Whenever you see your pet following your commands, patting it, rubbing its stomach, head, or other body parts, giving it a treat, and so on, will definitely make it realize that it should do what it did more often. By rewarding acceptable behavior in felines, aggressive behavior in cats can be decreased, or even totally eliminated.

These are some of the best cat behavior training techniques that will help you solve your concern of how to discipline a kitten or a cat. If you want a well behaved kitty, follow these pointers to the letter.
