You might have been walking at the local park one day with your spouse when you've seen a group of older people in formation, moving very slowly. You might've thought they were doing slow motion kung-fu moves!
What they were actually doing was Tai Chi. Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese martial art that has been around for a long time.
People do it to build strength, and they gain strength by practicing slow, calculated movements that build the muscles and also build character. Tai Chi can be very empowering.
One of the best things about this great martial art is that you don't need a lot of equipment to do it. All you need is some comfortable apparel, an open space, and a clear mind so that you can focus.
This is why it is such a great form of fitness that you can do in your home. Fitness centers and gyms these days cost so much money to enter, and you need so many kinds of equipment to get something out of your workout.
Tai Chi doesn't follow all this hype. It is easy enough to do in your own home.
So how does one get started doing this great pastime? There are a few simple things that you can do to get started:
Begin briefly with an instructor: If you are entirely new to the art of Tai Chi, it may be wise to start learning the basics from an instructor just for a little bit. There are moves and stances that you need to know how to do properly.
And one can sometimes only know how to do these properly when a professional shows you how and can tell you what you're doing wrong in your stance. A professional can also help you with your focus and your breathing, which are crucial to this martial art.
A video or a book about this art might be useful for a little bit, but in reality you need someone watching how you actually do it to make sure that you are doing it right. They can help and make sure you are doing it correctly so that you are not doing it the wrong way every time you do it in your home.
Find a practice space in your home: There is only one minor setback of doing Tai Chi: you will be moving around a lot and you will need some space to do it!
To do this, you need to find a large enough space in your home where you can do every movement uninterrupted. Start by quickly running through your specific routine to figure out how much space that you actually need.
Once you do this, you can move furniture or anything else around so that you can have adequate space. This is a very important step for one reason.
When you are doing Tai Chi, you need to clear your mind and be totally focused on the movements that your body is making. If you are worried about running into something or not having enough space when you're in the middle of your routine, it will easily break your focus.
Practice at a constant rate: To get really good at this art and be able to reap benefits from it, you need to consistently do it. It's the same as exercise, because you need to constantly be doing it to every get anything out of it.
To get the most out of this type of workout, you need to practice at least 4 to 5 times a week! This might be hard for some, since many exercise routines only require you to do those 2 or 3 times a week.
But with Tai Chi, if you don't dedicate that much time and effort to it, you won't get a lot out of it. You need to be consistent and promise yourself to do it every time you schedule to do it.
This is especially important if you're doing it at home. Without an instructor cheering you on and motivating you to go a little farther, it can be easy to get a little careless and miss a day or two.
