Forming Good Oral Hygiene Habits

Article Summary Children that form good dental hygiene habits early in life can expect to have fewer cavities and healthier mouths. Starting in infancy, children that see the dentist are able to learn how to properly care for their teeth.
It is important to start good habits for proper oral hygiene at an early age. Even before many infants see their first baby teeth growing in, parents can start them brushing their gums by allowing them to chew on a new toothbrush. As the tiny teeth begin to grow in the infant can begin caring about their teeth early on in life. While it is not advised to give the small children toothpaste, they can become accustomed to feeling the bristles of their toothbrush going to work to clean away the food that is leftover in their mouth after they have finished eating.

As children grow they can learn the proper methods for caring for their oral hygiene and form lifelong habits to keep them healthy and their teeth strong. Because enamel is unable to regenerate once it has been decayed, it is essential to have a solid foundation of good habits that can lead to a lifetime of proper oral care. By teaching children how to brush and floss properly many parents are keeping a watchful eye on the number of cavities that their children develop. After all of the baby teeth have grown in it is a good idea to take a small child to the dentist for their first checkup. While many dentists believe that sucking on a pacifier is an indication that the teeth will grow in crooked, there are precautions that can be taken early on to keep the little smiles in line with the development of the maturing teeth.

For some kids a visit to the dentist is a traumatic experience that is strange and unusual. Because they are not accustomed to going to the dentist, Marietta children sometimes have a hard time sitting in the examination chair while the doctor looks in their mouth. If a child first sees the dentist when they are beginning school this can be a difficult first visit, however if a child is taken to the dentist after their teeth first come in, the experience of going to the dentist office can be something that they look forward to.

Through proper oral care and taking the time early on to teach children how to care for their teeth and gums, parents can expect to have good reports from their kid's dental checkups. However even with the right brushing and flossing there can be times when a cavity can sneak into a tooth. For these instances the dentist can calmly treat the children that are used to seeing the professional and look forward to being rewarded with a new toothbrush and dental floss after their treatment is completed.
