The truth about the new ADHD treatments may shock you. As a caring parent, you want to give your child the very best medicine and this requires that you stay informed because many of these medications have side effects that are downright frightening. In this article, we will look at some of the newer medications, their benefits and side effects.

If your child has been recently diagnosed with ADHD or is on a medication that he does not tolerate well, this is why you may be interested in the newer ADHD treatment methods. Below are three prescription drugs (all stimulants) along with their benefits and side effects. (The reason that stimulants work to treat symptoms like hyperactivity is that children have a paradoxical system which means a stimulant can have the opposite effect that it has in adults.)

  • Focalin - is a stimulant that increases focus and attention and allows better control of impulses. Side effects include delayed growth and development and stomach issues, including appetite loss and nausea. Stomach issues alone can cause growth issues because if a child is not eating, then his body is not getting the nutrients for proper development.
  • Vyvanse - is one of the many new ADHD treatments. It is an amphetamine that is used to treat ADHD in children, teens and adults. For kids ages 6-12, the drug can improve focus and helps kids sit still, reduce tantrums and inappropriate behavior. Possible side effects: heart trouble, stomach issues, sleep problems, headaches, shakiness, weight loss and mood changes.
  • Daytrana is one of the new ADHD treatments that uses a patch to administer the drug, so kids don't have to take medicine at school. The patch is applied each day and is usually worn for 9 hours. Daytrana is a stimulant, but has a calming affect although the drug manufacturer is not sure why. Side effects include sleeplessness, vomiting and nausea, loss of appetite, mood changes, and flu like symptoms.

As you can see, while the new ADHD treatments can be beneficial for some kids, they have a long list of side effects which can make other kids much worse. Of particular concern are the side effects that affect growth and development. Also, no matter what a drug company reports in their literature, the long term effects of some of these drugs on a developing brain have yet to be determined.

It's important to note that there are natural remedies that are just as effective at curbing symptoms. In addition to reducing symptoms, they have no side effects. Instead of drugging your child, they work by giving the brain the nutrients it needs to function at optimally which means that they reduce hyperactivity, aggression and impulsivity while increasing focus and the ability to stay on task. Since these remedies work by giving the brain the nutrients it needs to restore proper function, your child can eventually stop taking them. From a research standpoint and from the vantage point of a caring parent, these are the real new ADHD treatments because they are effective, yet safe and natural. Best of all, they will help your child to function better in his environment without any short or long term side effects.
