The Mind-Body Connection ~ Keeping It Simple

Camille Strate | 06-15-2009 | Body-Mind | Viewed: 658 | Bookmark and Share
Article Summary We are not merely physical Beings. Our entire makeup is vastly misunderstood by a large portion of our fellow humans. People are typically quite content with going about their business, paying little, if any, mind to the marvels of their existence. And the more we learn, the more we see just how important it is to pay attention.
There is much talk, and much to be said, about the Mind/Body connection. Lots of talk, and books, and all manner of information at your fingertips. Rightfully so. This is no small matter; nor is it all that complicated. Fact is, it's so simple, even a child can see the correlation, long before there is an "understanding".

We are not merely physical Beings. Our entire makeup is vastly misunderstood by a large portion of our fellow humans. People are typically quite content with going about their business, paying little, if any, mind to the marvels of their existence. By this I mean, were they to stop, for just a moment, and really consider what goes on inside their heads, they'd know how exquisite they are. In so many ways.

Only recently (say, in the past 25 years) has the "public" been made aware of the studies and subsequent findings of the Mind/Body connection. Western medicine has ignored these studies for many years, in large part because of the "lack of proof". After all, science is about proof, is it not? If it can't be proven, it's shoved into the "philosophy" category (or, just as often, the "dreamer" category). No longer. With Quantum Physics on the rise in popularity, even the Everyday Joe is picking up books and watching Discovery Channel shows about the wonders of Quantum theories. And, from what I can tell, there's a lot about that field that is largely "unproven" too.

I don't think it really matters. The whole idea that something must be proven to be true is simply ridiculous. Can you prove there's a God? Can you prove that atoms exist. Do you realize that NO ONE has ever seen an atom? It's pure speculation. No kidding! But that didn't stop those fellas from growing their theories...and the atom bomb. YIKES!

Point is, the Mind/Body connection CAN be proven and you don't have to be a scientist to do it. You've got a body, yes? And a mind? So, why not do your own "experiments"? Why not, just for fun, see what you can discover about this powerful connection between your thoughts and your physical well-being (or lack thereof)?

If you're willing, and don't mind stepping out of that cozy little comfort zone, give this a little try. It's really quite simple. You might even think it silly. But so what? Try it anyway.

The next time you're not feeling so hot, whether it's because you've injured yourself, you've got a cold, you're stressed out, whatever...take 30 minutes. That's it. Just 30 minutes and watch a movie, or read a book, or call up your funniest friend...and LAUGH. Laugh from the core of your belly down to your toes. Laugh until you cry (or, if you're like my mom, until you pee your pants.) Laugh like you've never laughed before. And keep it up for as long as you can.

I guarantee you that if you can laugh for half an hour, you'll forget all about how icky you feel. Whether you're aching or nauseous or about to jump off the nearest bridge, does not make a difference. This little "exercise" will prove to you, without a single doubt, that what you THINK and how you feel are absolutely connected.

And if that doesn't work...I know where there's a great bridge from which to leap.
