Were you to sit and think for too long, you could probably find hundreds of things to cry about. Times are a bit "tough" at the moment. There are many who are experiencing huge life changes due to economic struggles. Lost homes. Lost jobs. Major cut-backs. Etc., etc., etc.
But, as always, there's always the other side of the coin. Sometimes, when I feel myself getting fearful about where the rent money is going to come from, I take a moment (or five!) to sit and reflect on all that I DO have. While there may be a shortage of some things, there is most certainly abundance elsewhere.
I have a lovely place to live, with all the comforts one could ask for. A warm, cozy bed. Clothes on my back. Shoes on my feet. Food in my fridge. People who love me. Critters who adore me! A yard and a garden. Trees and flowers. A truck that runs like a champ. Computer, TV, stereo, phone, internet. Geeez! I even have a video camera!
So what's to worry about? Why is it that I fear homelessness when the fact is TODAY I have a home! Today, I am fed. Today, all is well in my world, regardless of the balance in my checking account!
It is in the moments when we are most fearful that we must turn our attention elsewhere. The fear isn't going to solve anything. But giving our attention to helping others is a most powerful tool. Not just for those we're helping, but for ourselves. The moment we step outside our own troubles, and lend a hand to those who are struggling even more, is the moment that the floodgates open and all manner of magic happens.
When we help others, we experience those marvelous feelings of satisfaction, gratitude and love for all humanity. We get to open our arms, and our Spirits, to lift someone up. We get to see the smiles and hear the words of gratitude, from people who really do appreciate our efforts. We get to feel that true connection with the whole of humanity, the connection that shows us, without doubt, that we ARE all one. More and more, we grow the bonds of humanity, and watch as those we help, as well as our own selves, move out of fear and into hope.
Humans are pack animals. We need each other. We are not here to stand alone and fight our demons. We are here to stand together and share the bounties of this magnificent Universe. So, the next time you're sitting on your pity pot, why not get up off it...and go lend a hand. Watch and see the difference YOU can make as we work our way into this splendid new world!
