Drug Dangerous? So What? It's a Moneymaker!

Healing Bows to Profit
Chemotherapy for cancer, bypass surgery for atherosclerosis, statin drugs for high cholesterol; the list goes on. What do they have in common? They're all profit centers. In each case, there are better, cheaper, safer, more effective ways of treating these disorders, well known in the holistic community of doctors, but ignored by conventional medicine. The routine treatment of illnesses by conventional medicine is more about profits than about curing the patient. A particularly egregious example is the abomination of a drug named Gardasil.

In 2006, the pharmaceutical giant Merck gave Texas governor Rick Perry a healthy "campaign contribution" on the same day that they briefed his chief of staff on their drug Gardasil, a vaccine represented as protecting against cervical cancer. Merck's largess wasn't limited to just the governor. Eight state legislators also shared in the bonanza. The result was legislation requiring all schoolgirls aged 9 and up to be vaccinated with Gardisil before they could attend school. Interestingly, the governor's chief of staff is now a Merck lobbyist in Washington DC.

Women in Government, a group of female legislators, have also received hefty contributions from Merck and other giant pharmaceuticals, and as a result, have included widespread HPV screening and vaccination among their priorities. The Centers for Disease Control, not at all immune to the influx of obscene amounts of cash has recommended Gardasil vaccinations for all females from ages 9 to 26.

An Abominable Drug Unleashed
Logically and scientifically, there is no reason to push Gardasil immunization protocol on young girls. The evidence that it works at all just isn't there, and the evidence of serious danger is overwhelming. Since its introduction in 2006, Gardasil has caused over 7,000 adverse side effects in girls, ranging from blood clots to paralysis. This according to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System. Since September 2007, ten deaths have been reported, adding to the eight deaths prior to that date. Of those 18 deaths, eleven occurred less than a week after receiving the vaccine, and seven in less than two days. One girl died from inflammation of the heart, one from arrhythmia, and one from meningitis. An 11 year old girl died from anaphylactic reaction after receiving the vaccine. And to add insult to injury, the vaccine targets only one type of an array of over 100 kinds of cervical cancer; targets, that is, with zero empirical evidence that it works!

Vaccine Being Forced on Children
In spite of this, allopathic (so called conventional) physicians, always recipients of generous incentives from the giant pharmaceutical houses, almost universally advocate the use of Gardasil as a preventer of cervical cancer. Some physicians are going so far as to insist, to the mothers of these young girls, that their daughters soon won't be able to attend school without these immunizations.

The insane and dangerous rush by Merck to force the universal need for a drug on vulnerable young girls is motivated by only one consideration. To make a buck. If the company is successful in forcing the vaccination of all females aged nine to twenty-six, they stand to rake in more than 12 billion! A few million doled out to hungry and often ignorant advocates is peanuts.

Doctors Often Misled
The conventional doctors who are providing this vaccine, along with countless other drugs, are not all motivated by financial or other desirable incentives. Many are genuinely concerned with helping their patients. But they're also universally busy and do not have the time to investigate every new drug that appears on the scene. They rely heavily, often too heavily, on the pharmaceutical representatives who come to their offices armed with samples, pens, coffee mugs, party hats, basketball tickets, and whatever else might be appealing and provide them with carefully crafted information about the drugs and their use.

This fits in very well with the conventional.doctor's basic philosophy. The allopathic doctor is trained as an interventionist, which is probably the most significant factor that makes these doctors so vulnerable to the machinations of Big Pharma. Here they are easily led astray and lose sight of the fact that cervical cancer is easily avoided with regular pap smears. They know, but forget, that this slow growing cancer is just about 100% curable if caught early. The drug is the silver bullet and they're happy to take the easy way out and use it liberally. It all fits in with the doctor's training and the role in which he finds himself; which is to diagnose a disease and then treat that disease in the most expedient manner.

A Different Perspective: The Alternative Physician
At the other end of the spectrum is the "alternative" physician; the holistic, naturopathic, metabolic practitioner with a totally opposing approach to healing. These doctors are mavericks, often ridiculed by their peers, sometimes persecuted by governmental authority, and universally hated by Big Pharma and its ancillary commercial interests. They have the annoying habit of making sick people well. The single most important philosophy these doctors share is of vis medicatrix naturae; the healing power of nature.

Doctors who embrace this philosophy and approach healing from a natural or holistic direction, treat diseases from the perspective of helping the body get healthier, so that the body itself can evict any disease. They believe, and rightly so, that the body is its own best healer. So where a conventional doctor will routinely and unthinkingly use a drug, the alternative medic might look at why a patient's immune system seems to be malfunctioning, and determine what steps to take to change that. This might include encouraging the patient to adopt lifestyle changes and dietary habits.

Nothing Remains the Same
Possibly the greatest strength of the alternative physician; the holistic practitioner, is his willingness,and ability, to understand why people are sick and to deal with the underlying cause of their illness. More and more conventional doctors are abandoning the lure of Big Pharma and embracing, often reluctantly, the philosophy of the holistic physician. When a conventional doctor pauses for a breather from his frantic pace and takes a moment to wonder why his patient is coming back with the same disease all the time; or why this patient needs to be put on lifelong maintenance of a particular drug, he may start reading more, and start realizing that there could be a better way of dealing with patients; ways that he had not been taught in medical school. This doctor, then, is on his way to becoming an "alternative" physician. The roster of these physicians is getting bigger every year and we all have good reason to hope that change is in the air.
